After a long time I’am writing a post. And not the best one to write about!
As a responsible citizen I walk upto the vote booth NMKRV college, Jayanagar, Bangalore South Constituency. To my utter dismay I find name there but says “Deleted” in front of it!!
‘ How come? ‘ – I ask the officers in the room. They say either you were not there when they came for verification, or you changed your residence or you are dead. These are the likely cases. On further inquiry I found out all my family members names are intact. Weirdly I’m the one DELETED.
1. I have voted last time around. So there cannot be any confusion
2. If 4 of my family members are there and verified why was I not there?
3. I did get my “small” piece of paper before the elections with my name and constituency and where I should vote details.
There leaves no scope for confusion/change/editing at all. I have not shifted, moved, renamed myself or even died. I have been SIMPLY denied my right to VOTE.
Yes I’am being emotional here. Is’nt this my country? Can I not make a difference?
I then ask few officers whom do I talk to. They point me to the Returning Officers (Mr Hiremath) room. I walk in and tell the RO and his deputy (I guess) my problem. They are not surprised at the problem at all. The deputy (dont really know his name) then asks me to sit down calmly next to him on a bench. I was surprised by the hospitality. Only later I realize he has done this many a times through the day.
He calmly mentions that there has been a mistake from the printers/vendors who give out the list. He then adds that there have been many such cases and they can’t do anything much time around. I was completely shocked. Mistake? How many?? 10%? 20%? God only knows!!
He then says I can vote in the August council elections by filling form 6 later on. WOW! They are doing me a favour ?? My name should have been there in the first place, I had already voted last time from the same place..
I then ask them for a written statement that there has been a mistake and they will rectify. They simply refuse to do this. The deputy then suggests I give him a written complaint which they will ack the same. In a way he was helpful and said he will try to do something about it.
But obviously no one willing to accept that something has gone wrong!!
I write the complaint, then go out to get two copies for the record. I submit the complaint to this deputy and then he asks his junior to sign the ‘photo copy’ of it. Nobody has read the complaint.
The poor junior comes and signs it blindly without even reading it. I take the signed photo copy of it and walk out.I don’t really know if the ’submitted’ copy will go somewhere or even make a difference.
I recollect 2-3 such people having the similar problem but just walking away thinking its just another holiday.
Who cares right?
Find below the complaint I submitted. I really still want to vote!

Sad. Really sad. How irresponsible really. The irony is that, there are people with cameras filming how ’smoothly’ the entire process happened !! Denied the right to vote, then somebody comes to power, and we have complaints, and then we are told that it was ‘us’ who elected them; God what a strange democracy we live in.
Ashish, its really disgusting to hear what happened to you and at the same time I am proud of you for raising your voice against it.
God has been extremely kind to human race to gift us with thinking, analysing and questioning power. We truely need to make best use of it by raising our voices against any kind of injustice.
Denying a democratic citizen of his voting power is highly unacceptable and I urge everyone to take it seriously and not to treat Voting-day as just another holiday.
Honestly, Nothing Uncommon!
Alll said and done, Satyamev Jayate!!
’tis terrible. This happened to my dad a couple of elections ago, and is extremely frustrating. It was rectified in the subsequent elections, so he has voted since.
Just wondering about what we can do about this…is there an online forum…somewhere where one can submit a complaint to the EC?
@surya @rajeev @manish – yes it did leave me clueless and frustrated. Of course I did my bit of voicing it out. But there are quite a lot more like me it seems from the news today..
@Nikhil – Yes I will have to submit a form 6 and get my name added again. I don’t know about the forum? EC should definitely take notice of this and do something about it!
Bro,
i don’t know if i make sense….but if possilbe send a mail as well as post to the election commission office stating ur problem and stating that u have send the same posts to various leading newspapers as well as news agencies…
I think you should have called up one of the news channels or JaagoRe team and asked them to come and telecast this problem. My cousin went to vote in his constituency(Malleswaram) and found out that the voting machines were not working properly, leading to a huge delay in one person voting. Upon questioning the volunteers there, he was told that the machines are fine and he simply vote and go. So he called up the TV9 channel, who came to the spot and started telecasting this. The volunteers then became conscious as they would be screened on air and set things right. The officers think that they can get away with such nuisance and we as citizens should expose them. The fact that they deleted your name while every bit of information was verified (given the fact that you had the “small” slip) shows that the officers have been negligent and are now making excuses to get out the situation. A disappointment really… Wonder how many more people faced the same problem.
Well, this reminds me of US elections when Bush Became President for the first time.. Thankfully, I confirmed my name in the list online about a month back..
The same happened to my parents also..
In the famil except for mine, all other’s names was seen in the Deleted list. When my parents asked the people who were incharge of the booth they had no clue or explanation.
They had no other option but to come back home and enjoy the day off.
Who is responsible for all these goof ups??
@abhay @vinay @bharad – I did contact the press folks. I called up a reporter I knew in Bangalore Mirror. Within 30 mins she was there and she spoke to the returning officer there. She too was not convinced and said she has taken a detailed report along with my letter that was signed by them. Alas nothing happened after that. Neither did it get published nor the problem got highlighted.
As a matter of fact I sent mails to Deccan Herald & Times as well. Guess they are too busy too respond!!
@jayanth – how is this related to BUSH becoming president for first time? btw my name was there in the list when I had checked online.
@bharad – who is responsible? According to the “Returning Officer” of South Bangalore the printers and the vendors who printed the list!!
@vinay – many more people have faced this. I’m guessing atleast 10-20% of such a goof up has happened. In that case it’s not a fair election at all!
Just look at the links below. Errors are natural but for important thing like this is unacceptable. I tried hard to find what are the steps taken against this sort of mis-management, i just found none.
Let me know if you get to find one.
